We did some new things this year. I don’t know if it was right or not. We let the kids eat all the candy they wanted on Friday and that was it. The candy is gone. We NEVER let them have unlimited amounts of crap, ever. But I didn’t was a 2 month battle of begging for candy. I guess we’ll have to decide if we’ll do it again next year. But I don’t know…they really ate a lot of candy.

Please, do go to flickr to see the rest of the pictures and comment there too ;)

Homeschool Week 6

We had an adventurous week this week. Carter ate some nightshade in the backyard and had some stomach cramps, we called poison control. Hopefully many a lessons were learned. So we laid low for a few days. Got lots of home stuff done. Played lots of games, did some workbooks, read lots of books, played, listened to music, finished up The Bee Tree. We also had friends over for visits, library story time, open gym, pumpkin fest… Carter went into a haunted barn (Wilson Barn). It’s the perfect Haunting experience for kids. 50 cents and it’s either scary or not. Birthday parties and farmers markets rounded out the week.

Whenever Carter's sees a patch of pumpkins he wants me to take his picture.

Sunday~ Church. Carter got to go on stage and share his experience with Ramadan dinner. After we met my parents at Fall Festival in Kensington. There we saw animals, the kid’s cottage, made cider, watch as logs were prepared for a cabin and just enjoyed the outdoors! We also crafted; painted pumpkins and made candles. So much fun! After we went to dinner at mom and dads.

Our table includes goodies we have found in the wood and on our streets. Including; acorns, pine cones, wheat’s I picked from a field, some gem stones, pumpkin. This table will change as we find more goodies and seasonal as well.

Tuesday~ We met some friends at our church to explore the nearly 6 acres with trails there. It was also a nice spot in the woods. We sang songs about homeschooling ;) and had a ton of fun! After we swooped off to Nankin Mills for a homeschool nature study, leaf and tree identification. We went for a walk with the naturalist then stamped t-shirts. After we picked Paul up from work we went to Hay Day in Farmington. Hay ride (3rd trip to the woods that day!), roasting marshmallows, pumpkin painting, and more fun!!

Then off to say goodbye to friends who are moving out of state, and help pack a bit too. After we got home that night, we just sort of crashed.

Friday~ The kids and I went to one of our favorite cider mills for doughnuts and cider and playing. We also happen to be lucky enough to be there when a HUGE box of day of doughnuts were brought out. They had such fun feeding the ducks!

Homeschool Week 4

Posted on Oct 04, 2008 under Homeschool | 4 Comments

Ok, these posts might be boring but I like seeing what we’ve done ;)

This week we tried something different. We used this book. It was different. It’s all laid out by day and it uses things you can find in your home. Skye came along for the ride, as usual, but it was more geared towards 5’s. Which is fine with me, she’s 2. With the FIAR I could adjust the lessons towards her. But again, I’m not worried about her learning much now. Carter seemed to like it very well. He looked forward to what ever the days lessons brought. It wasn’t my favorite but it’s a nice break from FIAR. I thought some of it was hooky. And really, too much in one given day. We didn’t do it all, we picked and choose. Again, I think I’m switching to unschooling. I think we learn more when we have the time/energy to explore what interests us.

Highlights;
It was Bb week so we did worksheets and other activities related to B.
And circles.
We created an All About Me book. With worksheets all about Carter.
We added circle time this week and I think we will continue. Pledge, calender and weather.

Sunday ~ Church. Potluck @ friends. Carter found a dirt slide, had a TON of fun!!
Monday ~ Playing with friends and nature walk. Family game night.
Tuesday ~ Nature Walk with nature study
Wednesday ~ Home day, visit from friends, getting stuff done! Nature walk on our block, we found 5 different varieties of trees, including 2 different kinds of oaks!
Thursday ~ Library storytime. Open Gym. UUCF LLF (@ our church) in the evening, kids played in nursery. Carter really liked it and would like to ‘help out with the babies more often’. Awwh, sweet boy!
Friday ~ Grocery shopping, cleaning
Saturday ~ Farmers market, Greenfield Village
B with beans
Self portirats
tracing circles
we did seasons as well
the books we read this week
nature walk on our street

That’s it! Back to FIAR next week. The Bee Tree!!

The Green Hour #1; Getting started

We will be doing some nature study using this blog and The Handbook for Nature Study as a guide. Today was our first outing. We went with friends to Woodland Hills. A beautiful preserve with only one sad side effect, it’s right next to the highway. But a little bit of road noise won’t spoil our good time. It’s beautiful there, creeks, meadows and everything between. We saw plenty a mushroom today and a the last of the summer flowers as well. Carter and his friend D took an epic adventure up the creek that was the highlight of Carter’s day, maybe week, maybe month, maybe year… It was quite enjoyable to watch them enjoy being in the woods. The woods brings me peace.
So, the lesson was easy, take a walk. Observe, use a nature journal if you’d like to draw or note anything you’d like.
So, consider us part of the challenge. Let’s get outside!!

September seems to be a crazy busy month. So I cancelled our ‘formal’ homeschool plans this week. I’ve always respected and liked the unschooling philosophy anyway. Plus Carter is young, so we can get away with it ;) So this week we read books, played games, took field trips, talked, played with friends, enjoyed the nice weather….
