Ramadan Dinner

Posted on Sep 30, 2008 under Local Stuff To Do | No Comment

I was hoping to write more of a review closer to when we went, but the time slipped away from me. My family enjoyed attending the UofM Dearborn Muslim Student Association Ramadan dinner a few weeks ago. It is the largest student run event in Michigan. It was all about building bridges and respecting one another. It was very inspiring! The speakers were wonderful, the food was great. We felt very welcome and learned a lot! It was a wonderful kick off for the World Religions we will be studying in UU RE classes this year. This month; Islam.

The Green Hour #1; Getting started

We will be doing some nature study using this blog and The Handbook for Nature Study as a guide. Today was our first outing. We went with friends to Woodland Hills. A beautiful preserve with only one sad side effect, it’s right next to the highway. But a little bit of road noise won’t spoil our good time. It’s beautiful there, creeks, meadows and everything between. We saw plenty a mushroom today and a the last of the summer flowers as well. Carter and his friend D took an epic adventure up the creek that was the highlight of Carter’s day, maybe week, maybe month, maybe year… It was quite enjoyable to watch them enjoy being in the woods. The woods brings me peace.
So, the lesson was easy, take a walk. Observe, use a nature journal if you’d like to draw or note anything you’d like.
So, consider us part of the challenge. Let’s get outside!!

Homeschool Week 3; The world is our classroom

Posted on Sep 27, 2008 under Homeschool | 1 Comment

September seems to be a crazy busy month. So I cancelled our ‘formal’ homeschool plans this week. I’ve always respected and liked the unschooling philosophy anyway. Plus Carter is young, so we can get away with it ;) So this week we read books, played games, took field trips, talked, played with friends, enjoyed the nice weather….

Sunday International Day of Peace Made pinwheels for peace at church. Greenfield Village with my sister. Carter pushed a 42 ton roundtable and took a ride in a model T.
Monday Visit Great Grandma Feed fish in pond
I love Grandma
Tuesday Meeting followed by a picnic in the park with friends
Wednesday Tour a grain mill Visit a homeschool book store (more later..) pick raspberries (Carter picked a half quart!!) spend the day on 600 acres (awww fresh air!) gather eggs from the hen house. Loved being on the farm. I want to be a farmer when I grow up!!

Accident

Posted on Sep 26, 2008 under All about Me, Rants | 4 Comments

I’ve always thought of my blog as more of an online scrapbook than a journal/diary (hence all the happy go lucky posts) but I’m still mad.
I was hit last night alone in the car. Our neighborhood has a series of yield signs, nearly no stop signs. Last night I was on my way our solo and some idiot kids zipped from across Inkster to our side and blew their yield and crashed right into me. I saw the accident was unavoidable so I sped up and got out of the way as much as I could. But it still hit our passenger rear and our car us undriveable. Ok, so accidents happen right? I didn’t cause it (I’m actually a very safe driver!) but the chickens#$ts ran away. They never even stopped. I was spun around into a 180 and I saw the look in their eyes while they sped away. My temper came out in my and I was so mad I followed then 3 blocks. Got the first 3 letters of their licence plate. Then some neighbors chased them down a bit more, but they were gone. The police found their front end. I doubt the car drove much further.
So now the hassle. Cleaning out the car. Maybe getting new car seats (have to research this, no air bags went off but I was always told ANY crash needs new car seats). Rental cars (hopefully our insurance covers). None of this is a big deal. I’m OK. It could have been so much worse! What if I would have had to gone to the hospital? September is proving to be a bad month for us and accidents (Carter got 3 staples last September).
Anyway, life’s way of telling me to slow down from all we’ve been doing lately…

Good bye Summer! Today is the first day of fall. It’s gone by too fast this year. And while I look forward to all fall has to offer, I’m not really looking forward to the 6 months of hibernation that follow.

We did lots of fun things this year including;
two visits to the cottage, bats, tree swing, messy party, outside storytimes complete with explosive experiments, playdates, going to parks, water sport @ Jays, ice cream truck, Dunham beach, Lake Michigan, putt putt, backyard pool play, weekly farmers markets, slip and slide, berry picking, countless trips to Greenfield village, many times at music in the park, picking tomatoes from the garden, swimming in friends pools, loosing a tooth, DSC, making new friends, playing with old friends, go carts, bike riding including to Toys R Us, parties at the lake, swim lessons, tie die party, Aunties new apartment, water park, windows falling on heads, open houses at the fire station, horse rides, nature walks with friends….

what we didn’t get to flying kites, Toledo Zoo, more bike riding, more geocaching….

one last thing
